Project Description
Creating a Home-Working Hub & Gym
FARNHAM, SURREY
Groundfloor extension & garage conversion in Farnham
Brief
The outbreak of the coronavirus in 2020 forced many people across the UK to work from home – living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and garages all suddenly became offices. With two people working from home full-time, our client wanted to create a dedicated home working space that was separate from the other living areas in the home, and that would help them maintain a healthy work-life balance. One of the clients followed intensive strength and conditioning programmes for triathlon training, so they also wanted to build a home gym that would enable them to continue training whilst gyms remained closed.
Build
The client had already identified the existing garage as a suitable option for development. After assessing the space and area behind the garage that led into the garden, we recommended that the garage could be converted and extended into the garden to create the space they wanted for both the office and gym. We discussed a number of different construction options with the client in order to find the right solution for the interior layout and exterior finish – cedar cladding on the exterior walls with exact RAL colour matching on all windows, doors, light fittings and the roof trim. A roof lantern in the extension ensured that the space would benefit from natural light throughout the day, something that the client was eager to incorporate.

Result
Despite a number of delays due to UK lockdown restrictions during the outbreak of the coronavirus, our team demonstrated a positive, can-do attitude to complete the project in just five weeks. The garage was transformed into a tranquil office space set away from the main house, proving particularly useful as working from home has continued into 2021. Creating a home-gym has been invaluable in enabling the client to maintain a triathlon training programme.
“Martin and his team worked well within the timeframe and we are really pleased with the result. Nothing is too much of a problem for Martin despite plans changing a number of times throughout the project. The site was kept tidy and the communication with us was great.”
